One of the life lessons that I've learned in my twenties is that it is up to us to create our own happiness. Life circumstances change, little things add up to seem like big things, and life can just sometimes get us down. When these things happen, it is up to us how we react. We can just let life happen to us, or we can take control, and seek out and find happiness. One of the first steps to doing this is knowing what those things are in life that bring us joy and refresh our spirit. For me, being in the sunshine, in nature, with loved ones, and exercising are all things that make me happy. This week was a hard one, and by Friday night, I was exhausted emotionally. I knew that I could just wallow in my momentary unhappiness or do something about it, so I declared Sunday a fun day. We put our to do lists to the side and only allowed ourselves to do fun things. We went out to breakfast and coffee, went on a hike at the beach, put our feet in the crashing waves, ate a picnic, got frozen yogurt, went on an evening walk through our neighborhood with our dog, stopped for some beer tasting (or blueberry soda tasting in my case), and finished the day off with watching a show projected on our living room wall. The weekend started out with life seeming a bit overwhelming, and ended up with life seeming beautiful. This may be an oversimplification of joy, but to me, it reminded me again that it really is up to us to seek and find joy. Henri J.M. Nouwen said, “Joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day.” I have found this to be so true. When we were on our Sunday fun day, we couldn't stop thinking about you and how much fun we'll have when you get to go with us on all of our little adventures. That day will be here before we know it.
